A: Dental implant treatment consists of two phases; the surgical and the restorative phases.  There are certain specialists who will do only the surgical phase. These specialists usually are periodontists and oral surgeons.  They will place dental implants surgically and develop the surgical sites with bone grafts prior to the surgical implant placements.  Some surgical specialists also restore dental implants.

The dental specialists who will only do the restorative phase of the treatment are prosthodontists.  Prosthodontists do dentures, dental implant restorations and other dental prostheses.  Some prosthodontists also place dental implants.

General dentists also place dental implants and restore dental implants.

Implantologists are specifically trained to place and restore dental implants.  Implantology is not recognized as a dental specialty by the American Dental Association, although there may be some changes coming.
